Steve Trapmore MBE

Steve TrapmoreSteve was appointed Chief Coach of the Cambridge University Boat Club in September 2010. Before joining the CUBC Steve was Chief Coach of Imperial College Boat Club, responsible for the running of the entire programme from Novice to International.

Imperial's rowing programme developed quickly during his tenure, leading to the club gaining GB Rowing's High Performance Status in March 2010.

He guided individuals to success at National Trials, World Cup Regattas and World Championships. Success at key national events included The Head of the River Race, where the club finished as high as 2nd while winning numerous category pennants. His crews also raced at Henley Royal Regatta, where Imperial won the Visitors Challenge Cup in 2008 and 2010.

The highlight of Steve's highly successful rowing career was as stroke of the victorious British VIII that won the Gold medal at the Blue Riband event of the Sydney Olympics in 2000. Steve won a further three World Championship medals, including a Gold in 2002. He is married with 2 children, and likes keeping fit to the notes of 80's classic rock music.

Mark Beer

Mark BeerMark was appointed Assistant coach of the CUBC in January 2011. He works closely with Steve Trapmore in preparing the Cambridge Crews for the Boat Race, and was finishing coach for the Goldie in 2011.

A native of Australia, Mark has been coaching in Cambridge since September 2007 when he was appointed Head Coach at Jesus College Boat Club.

Mark began his rowing career in Canberra, Australia, in 1994 before turning to coaching in 1999. He was previously the Assistant Coach at Mosman Rowing Club in Sydney, a club that produced five Olympians for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.  During this period Mark was a New South Wales state development coach and team manager, managing the NSW team at the Youth Olympics in 2007. He also Managed the NSW State Team at the Australian National Championships in 2006 and 2007.  Mark studied sport science at the University of Canberra and has a degree in Applied Science, majoring in Sports Coaching.

Mark was awarded the Australian Institute of Sport prize in 2003 for excellence in the study of sports science. He is married to a fellow Australian, Kelly. Their first child, Zoe, was born in Cambridge in January 2011.

Donald Legget

Donald Legget

Donald rowed in the 1962 Goldie crew, and the 1963 and 1964 Cambridge Blue Boats. He is the club's 'Eminence Grise', having coached a CUBC crew every year since 1968.

His many achievements include coaching a string of Henley wins over 5 decades. This included the winning Leander Club Thames Cup VIIIs in 1968, 1969 and 1970. He coached the winning crew in the Silver Goblets in 1971 and the Double Sculls in 1972.

Donald also coached the Durham University 4- to win the Visitors' Cup, the GB Squad Heavyweight 4x to win the Queen Mother and the Cambridge University/Mladost (Croatia) Composite 4-, which won the Stewards'

Challenge Cup in 1995, and still holds the Course and Event record at 6.22. The following year Donald coached CUBC to win the Ladies' Plate.

More recently, Donald coached 1829 Boat Club's winning Wyfold and semi-finalist Britannia IVs at Henley in 2008, and 1829 BC's winning Thames Cup VIII in 2010.

Donald's role with Cambridge University Boat Club is to assist the Chief and Assistant Coaches plus President in their annual quest to win the Boat Race and the Isis v Goldie Race.

Martin Haycock

Martin HaycockMartin Haycock coxed the winning Cambridge Blue Boats in 1993 and 1994, and went on to cox medal winning crews for Great Britain and England between 1993 and 2002.

He has twice won at Henley Royal Regatta. This included victory as cox of the record-breaking 1995 NCRA Ladies' Plate VIII containing Steve Trapmore. Their crew still holds the record time to Fawley of 2.55.

Martin is a Life Member of London Rowing Club with 25 years of Tideway experience. Martin's role with CUBC is to coach the CUBC coxswains both in terms of Tideway knowledge and in how to work with the crews they cox.

Martin is a member of the CUBC Executive Committee, and served for five years as a representative for CUBC on the board of The Boat Race Company Ltd. His day job is to work for UBS.

Rowley Douglas MBE                  

Rowley DouglasRowley won Olympic Gold, coxing CUBC Chief Coach Steve Trapmore, in the British VIII at the Sydney 2000 Games. He played a key role in bringing the crew together during training and racing. Rowley works with Martin Haycock and the coaches to prepare the CUBC crews for the Boat Race.

Rowley works for GE and also as a motivational speaker.
