Young Guns Challenge at GB Trials - Apr 17
Recent Boat Race rivals Constantine Louloudis (Oxford) and George Nash (Cambridge) combined to compete in the GB Rowing Senior Trials Men’s Pair event on the Olympic course at Dorney Lake yesterday (17 April).
The pair, who won a silver medal for Britain in the U23 World Championships last year, took part in a thrilling final race against current Men’s four Olympic champions and Oxford Blues Pete Reed (2004/5) and Andy Triggs Hodge (2005), Cambridge Blue and fellow Olympic champion Tom James (2003/5/6/7) and Alex Gregory, plus former coxed pairs Olympic champion Greg Searle and Cameron Nichol.
Behind the two top pairs, which saw Reed and Triggs Hodge come from behind to beat James and Gregory, there was a prolonged battle for third and fourth spot, with Searle and Nichol eventually gaining the upper hand against Louloudis and Nash, after the young Oxbridge pair - 19 and 21 respectively - had threatened on the far side.
“We’ve had an outstanding set of trials on the Olympic course,” said David Tanner, GB Rowing Team Performance Director. “Exceptional racing, some stand-out performances and some young guns challenging for places in the team.”
