Press Release
Assistant Coach Rob Baker to leave Cambridge University Boat Club
Rob Baker, Assistant Coach at Cambridge University Boat Club, will leave Cambridge at the end of May 2009. Rob has been appointed as Lead Under 23 Coach for the Irish Team, where he will work with Martin McElroy, Performance Director for Irish Rowing.
Robin Waterer, Treasurer of the CUBC, said "we are naturally sad to be losing Rob but very proud that his record at Cambridge has resulted in this recognition of his talents and his new appointment. The Club is also very happy for Rob personally. Rob's appointment with a national rowing federation confirms the Club's tradition of developing top-class talent, and we are sure that he will succeed in this new rôle. He leaves with our very best wishes".
Rob Baker joined CUBC in 2001. He quickly achieved coaching success, with the Goldie BC crew that was to win the last "old-style" Britannia Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta. In 2005 Rob took responsibility for Goldie crews in the final stages of their preparation for their annual race against Isis BC. As Acting Chief Coach, while awaiting the arrival of Chris Nilsson in 2008, Rob coached a CUBC IV- to success in the Stewards‟ Challenge Cup at Henley, this crew also being selected to represent GB at the Poznan FISA World Cup Regatta. His 2008 Fours Head of the River campaign was also notable, bringing two pennants back to CUBC, the Elite IV+ being particularly noteworthy in achieving fourth place overall.
