Came to
Cambridge because it was the best academically for his course. Took up
rowing at school to get fit for rugby. Went on to win bronze in the
junior men’s four at the 2005 World Junior Championships. Has a younger
brother and sister. His brother won a silver medal for Great Britain in
the 2006 Coupe de La Jeunesse in the men’s eight. His father, Jamie
MacLeod, competed as a rower for Great Britain in two Olympic Games.
Alastair was in Cambridge’s Development Squad last year and did not
trial for Goldie or the Blue Boat.

Doug is
studying for a Post Graduate Certificate in Education at Cambridge.
There will be an element of family rivalry for Doug, whose father and
grandfather both rowed at Trinity College, Oxford. A former school
under-14 high jump champion, Doug was a silver medallist with the GB
lightweight quadruple sculls at the 2005 U23 World Rowing Championships
in the Netherlands. He was also a member of the GB lightweight men’s
four finishing sixth at the 2006 U23 World Rowing Championships in
Belgium. Doug was President of the Cambridge University Lightweight
Rowing Club in 2004.

wanted to see “another side” of the University. Was a junior world
medallist (eight) and a national champs gold medallist in 2003.
Competed at the Munich Regatta in 2003 taking gold in the pair.
Formerly a Coupe de la Jeunesse gold and silver medallist in 2002. Was
also in the GB men’s four at the 2005 World U23 Championships. Decided
to take up rowing at school because he was “rubbish” at football and
cricket. His mother and father have both recently taken up rowing.

Wanne is
carrying out research for a PhD in Plant Science at Cambridge. His
research will look at carbon allocation within plants, such as maize,
looking at ways of ensuring the most nutritious parts of plants are in
the bits that are being harvested for consumption. Wanne has a BSc and
MSc in Plant Sciences from Wageningen University in his native
Netherlands. He studied classical music while at high school, training
on the violin and recorder at the Royal Conservatory in the Hague.
Wanne took up competitive rowing at university in the Netherlands,
rowing in the freshman’s eight at Wageningen and was President of the
university boat club in 2004 and 2005. His brother, Peter, rows at the
Okeanos club in Amsterdam.

Oli already
has a BA and MPhil in Economics from Cambridge. He has a Dutch father
and English mother and lived in Holland until he was eight years old.
Took up rowing at Cambridge and rowed for his college in 2003 and was
part of the Goldie crew in 2004 and 2005. Won the Head of the Charles
with Cambridge in 2004. Has raced competitively as a sailor in the
Laser and 29er. In 2005/6 Oli took a year out from rowing and decided
to try his hand at boxing. He boxed once for Cambridge against Trinity
College, Dublin, in a Private Match and says he enjoyed the experience.

Tobias
enrolled to study Modern Languages in 2005 but decided to concentrate
solely on his studies in his first year. Having now decided to try out
rowing, Tobias could potentially emulate his Great Uncle Kenneth
Garnett who was a Boat Race winner with Cambridge in 1914 but who then
died during the First World War. Previously, Tobias has won gold at the
Coupe de La Jeunesse with Great Britain in the coxed four in 2004 and
was in the British eight at the 2005 World Junior Championships. Tobias
was a member of the GB National Youth Sailing Squad but preferred
rowing because he wanted to be involved in a team sport. His younger
sister, Amelia, has continued in sailing and competed this year in the
European Junior Championships. Tobias has sung in choirs at school and
has performed Evensong at various locations. He is now part of a close
harmony group in Cambridge. There is a tradition in the family of
studying at Cambridge and particularly at Trinity College.

David, a
philosophy student, took up rowing at King’s School, Chester, inspired
by established national rowers like Tom James, this year¹s Cambridge
President. Has previously competed for GB winning the GB v France match

runner, was part of the Cambridge Development squad from the summer of
2006 onwards and was a Prince Albert Cup (coxed four) semi-finalist at

2005. Won the Ladies’ Plate at Henley Royal Regatta (2005), and has won
both the Elite Men’s and Women’s coxed four events at the Four’s Head.
He is also boxing for Cambridge. Having won his first bout, he looks to
secure the featherweight spot, and a victory, at this year’s 100th
Boxing Varsity Match. Russ began steering boats at Brown University,
where he coxed for four years. Currently building on his 2005 MPhil. in
Chinese Intellectual Property Law as a PhD Candidate in the Oriental
Studies department, focusing on Sino-America Petroleum Resources
Conflict Prevention. Looking to pursue employment in China
post-Cambridge.
