CUBC’s campaign to win the 2019 BNY Mellon Boat Race commenced on Monday 3rd September, with President Dara Alizadeh and Executive Chairman Ewan Pearson welcoming the squad to Goldie.
Chief Coach Rob Baker set out the goals which will guide the squad over the next seven months through to racing Oxford on April 7th. “We want CUBC to be the best racing, and fastest, crews in the country. We want them to be the crews that will stand up and be counted when it comes time to race, and I believe we have the squad to do so”, Rob commented.
The squads spent the rest of Monday settling into Cambridge and preparing for their first ergo test of the campaign. Their 2k test was held Tuesday morning and will be followed by a 5k test later in the week. Dara was positive about the 2k test results and noted, “we’ve had a number of PBs from new and returning athletes, and it shows that the squad has started the work that needs to be done in the preparation for the 2019 Boat Race. The test scores show we are in a decent place, but we can never be complacent. Oxford has been strong in the years after a loss, and we expect them to come out with all guns blazing”.
CUBC will race several times before Christmas, including at the National Championships on October 20th at Nottingham, and then Fours’ Head on November 3rd.
